Okay, made a point to make a Wednesday pickup instead of my usual Friday. I wanted to read this before everyone else got spoilery. Alrighty, let's get the first thing out of the way: NO TRANSFORMATION this issue, just the beginnings of one, with Jen blacking out before she Hulks Out. She's decided to work back at her "Old Firm" ,  I'm not sure if this is a call back to Dan Slott's run; her clientele seems to be The Weird of mutants, monsters and Mad Science victims. Looks like there is still humor in the book, but it has that vibe of shows like "Girls" low key with no fourth wall breaking; she does refer to an "inner voice" in her head, but it doesn't seem to be Hulk related. Her first client is a Weird Chick named "Miss Brewn" with very pale skin a strange eyes, being harassed by her landlord for eviction. Seems Miss Brewn can't leave her apartment.... ever. She refers to some kind of attack and how it changed her. Judging by her appearance she doesn't seem to be human and she indicates she has to be home at sundown before... Something. Jen returns to her apartment, but the tensions building up at work (everyone seems worried about her... they keep saying she looks "fine" which they don't mean and wonder why she isn't green anymore) Jen finally has a seizure and is about to Hulk Out... but blacks out before the transformation is complete. Meanwhile Miss Brewn seems to be taking to herself... or to some unseen thing which answers.

I wasn't surprised that there would be no Hulk this issue. The variant covers give us a good idea what she will look like anyways. The artwork was nice... but nothing like that Dale Keown cover I posted. What struck me most about what I read... That this could be a Jen centered comic with The Hulk appearing only in moments of tension. Think The Incredible Hulk TV series where it's mostly David Banner with the last fifteen minutes or so being left over to Lou Ferrigno. I'm not sure how I feel about this. The author has stated in interviews this is about Jen processes her rage and trauma; but that makes the title sound like it's going to be more about therapy than having adventures (or even just smashing things) Jennifer is shown watching baking videos on YouTube (!) because it's supposed to keep her calm. Whereas before She Hulk was not only the dominant personality... It WAS Jen. "Jennifer Walters" was basically a set of clothing She Hulk would occasionally wear.

If this is a Jen centered title, will Hulk even be articulate? Clearly this is being treated as a Beast that is out of control. I'm going to follow this run since I've followed others that I wasn't particularly fond of, but She Hulk is one of my favorite characters and an obvious inspiration in my work. What are your thoughts after reading this issue? Are they the same as mine? Or do you have a different take?

I was looking forward to this issue. But I have to admit I'm very disappointed. No Hulk? And after all that promised build-up by Marvel? Awful. I wish I did't have to say that.
